 IT Technician Intern

 

As an IT Technician intern at VXI Global Solutions, I had the opportunity to gain hands-on
experience in the field during the summer of 2020. The responsibility of our department was
sending out company equipment nationwide to both new hires and current employees in
order for them to work from home due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

One of my main responsibilities as an IT Technician intern at VXI was re-imaging old
equipment, as well as programming new equipment. This required a high level of attention
to detail and accuracy, as each piece of equipment needed to be properly configured and set up
in order for employees to access the company's networks and programs. Additionally, our team
was responsible for sorting and cleaning old equipment in preparation for shipment, as well
as packaging and shipping all of the required equipment to the employee.

To better understand my main responsibilities of an IT Technician at VXI, I can summarize
my job duties with three main titles: 

• Program Installer 

• Plug Inserter

•  Box Maker

Program Installer: 

I installed required software on every piece of equipment shipped to a VXI employee in order
for them to access company networks and programs. This process was oftentimes lengthy
as download times would vary depending on the number of agents working on-site. There
were several programs that employees needed in order to work from home while properly
attending to a client’s customer’s needs. These programs varied in utility, from Skype and
Microsoft Office, to VMWare, a cloud computing software to access company computers 
virtually. In addition, it was our responsibility to double check that the programs installed
would work correctly to avoid a scenario where an employee would receive a faulty piece
of equipment.

Plug Inserter: 

In addition to installing programming, I also confirmed that other pieces of equipment sent
along with the computer would work properly as well. I sent out every computer with a
monitor, mouse, keyboard, webcam, headphones, adapters, and the proper cables necessary.
I confirmed that all of those pieces of equipment worked properly. Thus, I plugged all of the
mentioned pieces of equipment into an outlet or computer to ensure that the equipment was
working properly. However, if the piece of equipment was new, I did not have to verify that
it worked. This process involved a lot of plug inserting, which quickly became very
monotonous. I inserted different types of plugs into all different types of sockets: small,
narrow, and long. After confirming that each piece of equipment worked, I carried the
equipment to our equipment logger.

Box Maker: 

I made cardboard boxes for all of the equipment sent out to employees. As the intern, I
was often tasked with the monotonous task of making these boxes.

However, I found this process therapeutic after some time. The predictability of the
boxes was comforting. I followed each fold that was always lined out, exactly. Like origami,
a complete box was a perfect result of a bunch of folds.

After some time, I took on the responsibility of ensuring that there were always enough
boxes already made, so that the process of making boxes would never be a bottleneck
in our process. Like a box making machine, I sat with my tape gun and taped each edge
with precision and speed, making sure all edges of the cardboard box had a sufficient
amount of tape to prevent open boxes during shipment.
