The Transition from Student to Employee

The main focus of my life for the past couple of months has been finding a job in an industry I want to pursue. As a business major, the job recruitment process was always something that loomed in the back of my mind. It was something that I knew I would have to tackle eventually, but the weight of that task never really hit me until senior year. The recruitment process is one that every college student undergoes during their college career, and is filled with confusing feelings of pressure, self-doubt, and anxiety. Many often pursue an Investment Banking career path, or some sort of consulting/advisory position for a Big4. However, I ultimately set my eyes on pursuing a career path in Risk Management. This decision to pursue Risk Management was not an easy one. Frankly, it was overwhelming to think about committing myself to a specific sector of business for the rest of my life. However, after taking Professor Jaconi's Risk Management class, I became fascinated about how companies tackle risk and the complex inner workings of the insurance industry.

Once I had a clear idea of what I wanted to pursue, I started applying to job openings in the Risk Management field. I spent a lot of time crafting my resume and cover letter, tailoring them to each job I applied for. I also made sure to network with professionals in the industry and attend job fairs to increase my chances of finding a job. It is a competitive process, and there were times when I felt discouraged, but I kept pushing forward and trying my best. A silver-lining I have found through recruiting season has been the chance for me to grow as a person. As someone who is more reserved and to myself, networking can oftentimes be draining for me. However, after practice and experience, I have found that networking has become more natural to me due to my genuine curiosity for the Risk Management industry. Changing my perspective about networking in this way has helped tremendously to relieve the pressure that oftentimes comes with networking.

As I continue through the job recruitment process, I am becoming more stressed about interviews. I oftentimes put a lot of pressure on myself, but I should give myself some more grace during the whole process. Interviews, as well as the entire job recruitment process, is all a learning experience. As long as I commit myself to doing the best as I can, and continue to learn and become more experienced throughout the recruitment process with different companies, I believe that I have the determination to eventually be successful. After all, an interview is just an opportunity to showcase my skills and experience, and to learn more about the company and the industry. The pressure to present myself in the best possible light can be daunting, but I am slowly learning to approach interviews with a growth mindset, viewing each interview as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Although the entire process from transitioning from a student to an employee can be daunting and discouraging, its important to keep a positive mindset throughout the experience. Although the result of my performance is an important aspect, I believe that the most important element to prioritize is to continue improving. The entire transition from student to employee is stressful, but exciting as well.

Putting the Rabbit in the Hat Post 2

Putting the Rabbit in the Hat by Brian Cox is a memoir that stands out from others in the showbiz genre. It is not just a feel-good story of rags to riches, but an honest and raw account of Cox's life, both on and off stage. From his difficult upbringing in a poor quarter of Dundee to his successful career in theatre, film, and television, Cox bares it all. He talks about the tragic loss of his twins and the impact it had on his life, his mother's breakdowns and suicidal tendencies, and his own struggles with darkness.

One of the most striking things about this memoir is Cox's brutal honesty. He is unafraid to voice his opinions on other actors, directors, and even Princess Margaret. He is critical of the feudal society that he believes holds people back and speaks openly about his own fears and insecurities. Despite the darkness that permeates throughout the book, there are moments of lightness and humour, such as the onstage love scene that leaves Cox with a friction burn on his surname. Overall, Putting the Rabbit in the Hat is an look at a remarkable life of a successful Scottish actor and the struggles and triumphs that come with it.

In conclusion, Putting the Rabbit in the Hat is not just a memoir for fans of Brian Cox or showbiz enthusiasts. It is a book for anyone who has experienced loss, struggled with their own demons, or fought their way through difficult circumstances. Cox's honesty and vulnerability are inspiring and a reminder that even the most successful people have their own battles to fight. It is a book that prompts you to make reflections in your own life, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys an underdog story.

"The Sweet Science": Boxing’s History with Humans

"You don't lose if you get knocked down; you lose if you stay down"

- Muhammad Ali

Boxing, often referred to as "The Sweet Science", is a sport that has captivated audiences for centuries. Dating back to ancient civilizations such as Greece and Rome, boxing has evolved into a modern-day sport with international appeal. The sport of boxing has a rich history that is intertwined with human culture. From the raw power of a heavyweight knockout to the speed and agility of a lightweight fighter, boxing has something for everyone. Over time, the sport has evolved, with changes in rules and equipment, but the essence of boxing remains the same - two individuals testing their strength, agility, mental-toughness, and endurance against each other in a ring. In this article, we will take a closer look at the sport of boxing, including its history, current state, and what makes it so intriguing for both participants and fans.

A Brief History of Boxing
Boxing has a rich history that can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where it was considered a test of strength and skill. The sport was introduced to the Olympic Games in 688 BC and was a major event in the ancient world, with ancient Greek fighters using leather straps to protect their fists. Eventually, boxing became popular in England
; known as the bare-knuckle era; where the first recorded professional boxing match took place in 1681 and soon spread to other countries, including the United States, where it became a national phenomenon.

The sport continued to evolve over time, with the introduction of new equipment, such as gloves, and changes in rules, such as the introduction of weight classes. In the modern age, professional boxers use 8-10oz gloves depending on their weight-class and gender. Today, boxing is a highly regulated sport, governed by various international organizations (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO) as well as US State Athletic Commissions, and is a staple of the modern-day Olympic Games.

In addition, boxing has produced some of the most iconic athletes in sports history, including Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, and Mike Tyson, who are remembered for their achievements both inside and outside of the ring. These athletes not only displayed their incredible skill and athleticism in the ring but also challenged societal norms and brought attention to important socio-political issues the US faced during the 1900s.

The "Science" Behind Boxing
Boxing is a sport that is equal parts physical and mental. It requires both physical and mental strength, while testing a fighter's ability to withstand and deliver blows with proper technique. A fighter must be able to read their opponent's movements, react quickly, and deliver precise strikes to succeed in the ring. This combination of physical and mental skills is what makes boxing so captivating to both watch and participate in.

One of the most fascinating aspects of boxing is the strategy involved in the sport. Unlike other contact sports, boxing is a one-on-one competition, where the objective is to strike your opponent while avoiding their strikes. The strategy in boxing can range from aggressive and unrelenting pressure to a more patient and calculated approach. The success of a boxer depends on their ability to read their opponent and make adjustments against to their strategy accordingly. According to Floyd Mayweather, arguably the greatest boxer of all time: "A true champion can adapt to anything".

Boxing also offers a unique type of physical and mental training. The sport requires intense physical training and preparation, with boxers often engaging in a strict regimen of cardio, weight training, and hand-eye coordination exercises. The mental preparation required in boxing is just as intense, with fighters needing to have a high level of mental toughness and the ability to stay focused under pressure for prolonged periods of time. Often, a mental lapse is what causes a boxer to lose a fight, not a physical or technical error.

The Current State of Boxing

Boxing is a sport that is enjoyed by millions of fans around the world and has a thriving professional scene. However, the sport of boxing has faced many challenges throughout its history, including concerns about the safety of fighters and questions about the ethics of prizefighting. Despite these challenges, boxing has grown into one of the biggest sports, with new generations of fighters and fans discovering the sport's appeal across the globe.

In recent years, the sport of boxing has undergone a resurgence in popularity, with the emergence of new stars and the introduction of new technologies, such as online streaming, which has made it easier for fans to access and follow the sport. In addition, the recent popularity of YouTube and Celebrity boxing has further pushed the resurgence of boxing among today’s popular sports, bringing excitement and energy to both the ring and media. The future of boxing looks bright, with new fighters entering the sport, introducing with them new styles and techniques, and a continued passion for the sport that has lasted for centuries. With numerous organizations and weight divisions, there is a wide range of talent on display, from rising stars to established champions.

Boxing's Grip
Boxing is a sport that appeals to a wide range of people for various reasons. For some, it is the raw power and excitement of a knockout. For others, it is the technical skill and strategy a boxer displays during a fight. Regardless of what draws people to boxing, the sport has a unique ability to captivate and entertain. It is timeless sport with a rich history and a bright future. Whether you are a fan of the sport or a fighter, there is something truly special about the art of boxing. From the physical and mental challenges it presents to participants, to the excitement and drama it brings to fans, boxing is truly "The Sweet Science".

Putting the Rabbit in the Hat

I chose "Putting the Rabbit in the Hat" by Brian Cox because I am interested in the life experiences of successful people and how they rose above adversity to reach their goals. As a college student, I believe that learning about the journeys of others can be inspiring and provide valuable lessons for my own life. Hearing the difficult journey successful people endure in order to become part of the 1% is motivating for me.

I am enjoying the Brain Cox's book. Cox's writing style is engaging and allows me to get a sense of his unique personality. I find his vulgar language both amusing and engaging. In addition, I especially appreciate his honesty and openness in discussing both his triumphs and shortcomings. He has overcome unfortunate circumstances since his childhood, continuing to adapt to what the environment requires of him. I am excited to read more and hear more of his life stories.
