The reason why I read Resilient by Dr. Rick Hansen was because the concept of resilience is one that is highly relevant at this point of my life. Lately, it has been a bit overwhelming to juggle school, interviews, social life, and boxing/gym. I have been feeling more tired and unmotivated as of recent, and the topic of building a strong mental core spoke to me deeply. In addition, I've believed that mental strength is key to living a happier life, and this is one of the topics Dr Hansen discusses. Often, the reality of our situations isn't as overwhelming as our perception of them.
The book has been filled with lots of great takeaways for me to apply to my daily life. Every chapter leaves me feeling more in control of my life, and confident tackling my daily responsibilities. The point that struck me the most was how needless anxiety can build up an immense amount of stress and fatigue. A constant state of anxiety can also cause people to miss emotional distances creeping up in relationships and overreact to "exaggerated" threats. Constant, needless anxiety ultimately leaves a person less resilient.
I enjoyed the book because of how easily digestible the topics were. There are 12 chapters in total that each focus on a different aspect of resilience. Every idea/section is relatively concise, and chapters are ended with key points to help the reader reflect on the topics. The exercises that Dr. Hansen provides are incredibly helpful as well, with many of the exercises focused around taking a moment to be present and consider a new perspective. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is feeling looking to improve their mental strength and build an unshakeable core. It's helped me manage my anxiety, build my mental strength, and approach challenges with confidence.
Vincent,
ReplyDeleteI really like your description of how this book affected you and how you could actually apply some of it to your life. I also like how you described how easily digestable the book was - I think that is really important in getting points across and being impactful, so I like how you added that
Hi Vincent, your first paragraph really spoke to me. I enjoyed some of the same lessons from my book aswell. I am happy to hear that this book was helpful to you and provided some great tips!
ReplyDeleteAs someone who is also looking for the answer to resiliency and finding mental strength, you've convinced me that this book is the start finding that answer! I enjoyed hearing about how the chapter resonated with you and how the chapters made you reflect upon your person life. Will definitely check the book out.
ReplyDeleteHi Vincent, I can understand your reason for choosing your book, as I agree that this semester has been overwhelming with school coming to an end. I enjoyed reading your description of the book, and i’m happy to hear that you gained some useful knowledge to apply to your life! Your post has me interested in reading it myself!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like this book was a great choice for you and I hope it helps you with feeling overwhelmed with all your activities. I think the majority of college students don't know how to deal with anxiety htat can build into unnecessary stress. Your post has definitely piqued my interest in this book!
ReplyDeleteVincent, I liked your book choice for Book 2. As students, we are so busy juggling school, social life, work, family, and friend obligations. I think focusing on resilience and taking care of yourself is such an important skill to focus on. Recognizing the effect of anxiety and how that shifts your perceptions is important.
ReplyDeleteHey Vincent, could not agree more. Life just gets crazier and crazier. Sounds like the book is helping out though. I think an important note is to keep practicing what you learn (I am a victim of not doing this). It's very nice in the moment to read this advice but it's so easy to forget about it with all that goes on in life. If it's helping you, keep pushing! Thank you for the recommendation, I'll make sure to give the book a look.
ReplyDeleteHey Vincent glad we chose the same book! I'm glad you enjoyed it too, and it seems we are both going to walk away with useful skills to manage stress and be more calm.
ReplyDeleteHi Vincent, also read this book! Thanks for writing this review. I think that we both not only enjoyed the book but got some helpful take aways from it. Hopefully we can apply this in future class assignments! I would love to further discuss about what you thought about the book some time in the near future!
ReplyDeleteHi Vincent, we read the same book and I felt the same way going into the book. I also really liked the exercises and reflecting on past situations to get a clear understanding of what Dr. Hanson was explaining. I enjoyed this book a lot and am glad I chose it because I was also able to take away a lot from it.
