Putting the Rabbit in the Hat by Brian Cox is a memoir that stands out from others in the showbiz genre. It is not just a feel-good story of rags to riches, but an honest and raw account of Cox's life, both on and off stage. From his difficult upbringing in a poor quarter of Dundee to his successful career in theatre, film, and television, Cox bares it all. He talks about the tragic loss of his twins and the impact it had on his life, his mother's breakdowns and suicidal tendencies, and his own struggles with darkness.
One of the most striking things about this memoir is Cox's brutal honesty. He is unafraid to voice his opinions on other actors, directors, and even Princess Margaret. He is critical of the feudal society that he believes holds people back and speaks openly about his own fears and insecurities. Despite the darkness that permeates throughout the book, there are moments of lightness and humour, such as the onstage love scene that leaves Cox with a friction burn on his surname. Overall, Putting the Rabbit in the Hat is an look at a remarkable life of a successful Scottish actor and the struggles and triumphs that come with it.
In conclusion, Putting the Rabbit in the Hat is not just a memoir for fans of Brian Cox or showbiz enthusiasts. It is a book for anyone who has experienced loss, struggled with their own demons, or fought their way through difficult circumstances. Cox's honesty and vulnerability are inspiring and a reminder that even the most successful people have their own battles to fight. It is a book that prompts you to make reflections in your own life, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys an underdog story.

Thanks for writing this great review! I didn't know that Brian Cox lost twins and he grew up with such a difficult childhood. That makes his rise to stardom all the more respectable and impressive. After reading this review, I am further interested in reading this book.
ReplyDeleteYour summary of this book was very well written. The way you detailed and described the book makes me want to read it now. I love a good underdog story so based on your review I would really enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your description of the book and how it briefly explained the main points, just enough to make us interested in reading for ourselves. I also like the fact that he is brutally honest. I think nowadays people are extra careful with what they say, which I'm not a huge fan of, so I'm glad Brian is honest and vulnerable in his story!
